What is Christianity

Christianity is the faith followed by over 2 billion believers’ worldwide.

Christians believe in the existence of God as the creator and overseer of the universe. We as Christians also believe in Jesus Christ as the Saviour, the Son of God and follow and practice his teachings and those of the bible as direct instructions from God to man.

Christianity started 2000 years ago after Jesus Christ was crucified in Israel. God created all mankind. The first and only man created directly was Adam who was the forefather of all men. Adam originally had a relationship and fellowship with God and was given the whole earth and all its creatures to master and tend to. He was also given the woman Eve to be his helper.

Just as there is a physical world that we can see, there is also a spiritual world which we cannot normally see into. This is inhabited by spiritual beings both good and evil. Adam the first man was tempted or tricked by the master of these beings (Satan, a rebellious angel) into disobedience against God. This was the first sin; the downfall of man and its consequence was separation from God and all future sins.

As God had handed over dominion of the world to mankind, he being a just and righteous God, needed to send another man to rescue and deliver the earth from sin and to take back the dominion of the earth from Satan to whom it had been handed by Adam.

Hence God has had to send his own Son, Jesus Christ who is both the incarnation of God and the Son of God at the same time, sinless and perfect to wrest the world back from Satan.

God is both perfect and holy. Sin demands punishment. On the other hand, God is merciful and gracious. Therefore he has chosen to both set the sentence and pay the price himself. He has done this not by cancelling the sin but by sending the completely innocent Jesus Christ to take the punishment for all the sin of mankind once and for all. “The lamb of God who takes the sin of the whole world”. To do this he had to come in the form of man as a human being born of a woman but in miraculous fashion to a virgin mother in Bethlehem, Israel about 2000 years ago.

Various men were sent by God several hundred years before his birth to forecast the way in which Jesus would come and the things he would do including delivering the Jewish people from captivity.

Jesus demonstrated that he originated from God (and was God) through the performance of many miraculous things such as healing lepers, opening the eyes of the blind, creating wine and food, walking on water and raising the dead back to life. Further Reading
